We have begun our ocean animal research project! This will be a month long process where each student researches a different animal, writes a brief information text about the animal, and completes a poster to present to the first grade classes. I will update the gallery below weekly with new photos of this incredible process!
On Friday, we were lucky to go on a field trip to Hancock Shaker Village. Although the weather was not as cooperative as we would've preferred, we all had such an amazing time! The students loved seeing, petting, and learning about the different baby animals at the village. The students learned how the Shakers used weaving to make clothing and blankets and all about wood carving as well. Please enjoy seeing some of the photos from the trip in the gallery below!
We have had an AMAZING month of March! We began our embryology unit in the beginning of the month! The students earned about the life cycle of a chicken, the part of an egg, how to take care of eggs in an incubator, how chicks hatch out of the eggs, and then got to WATCH the chicks actually hatch and hold them! What a wonderful experience this was for everyone. During the past 21 days, the students had many jobs. We turned the eggs three times a day, just like a mother hen would. We graphed the incubator temperature each time we turned the eggs. We recorded the time of day we turned the eggs each time. We graphed the classroom temperature once daily. So not only were we learning about life cycles, but we were learning to make bar graphs and line plots and learned to tell time right along the way! The students were so lucky to be able to see the chicks hatch on Wednesday and then we were able to take care of them until Friday. Everyone was so excited to observe and hold our 14 babies. Many different classes throughout the school visited to see the chicks as well! It has been a busy, busy month! But I bet each first grader would tell you it was their favorite month so far- I know it has been mine! Please check out the gallery below for photos!
We were so lucky this week to have another community reader come in to teach the class! Officer Derby stopped by to read Officer Buckle and Gloria to the entire first grade! Not only did the kids love the story, but they learned all about the importance of following safety rules. Officer Derby shared why is job was important and a little bit about what he does during his day. He even answered questions about his favorite ice cream and fruit! The students LOVED having him read to them. After the story, the students created their own posters of Officer Buckler with an important safety rule. Some rules included: Keep your hands to yourself. Always walk in the hallways. Never play with fire. Look both ways before you cross the street. The students did a great job! Don't forget to check out the gallery below for some pictures!
If you can believe it, the 100th day has come and gone! I'm not sure how it went by so fast! But we had an AMAZINGLY FUN day on Thursday! We began the day learning a game called Race to 100. Then students made patterns out of their names on a blank 100's chart. Our next fun activity was called 100 seconds. Students had to predict how many times they could do certain activities (clap, write their name, sit and stand, touch their toes) in 100 seconds. Then they were actually timed while doing them to see if their predictions were correct. We then read a book called Pigs In Hiding, where 100 pigs play hide and seek. After recess, the students were challenged to find all 100 pigs that hid in the classroom and make a giant 100's chart! THAT WAS A FUN ACTIVITY! The students had a blast find pigs in their desks, under chairs, in the books, and in their mailboxes! But I think the BEST part of our day was seeing all the students spectacular 100th day projects! They were all so proud to share. Our 100th day showcase was also a HUGE success. Thank you to everyone who came to support the first graders and their hard work! Check out the gallery below to see all the GREAT projects!
This year first grade is working to have community member join in with our learning. This past week we were super lucky to have our first community reader come in! Dr. Jake McCandless, our Superintendent, took time out of his busy schedule to read and do a project with our students! He read the story "A Bad Case Of The Stripes" by David Shannon. If you've never read it, you should! Its a first grade favorite! He began his visiting by asking each student their name and told the students about his role in our community. After he read the story, the students created portraits of themselves with stripes containing pictures or words about what make them unique. It was a wonderful experience for all the students. Check out our photos below!
WHAT A WEEK WE HAD! Even with the disappointment of our cancelled field trip on Monday, I still think the class would say this week was one of the best they have had this year!
On Monday we finished our How-To Carve A Pumpkin flip books, learned about the pumpkin life cycle, and made a pumpkin math book all through using our listening skills. On Tuesday we had our VERY FIRST secret reader of the year! A HUGE thank you to Greg Herrman for taking time out of his busy schedule to read to the class. Jocelyn was so surprised when he walked through the door! Then on Wednesday we had our awesome PUMPKIN DAY! In the morning our color teams got together and counted pumpkin seeds using tens frames from 5 different sized pumpkins. We discovered the bigger the pumpkin, the less seeds and "guts" it has! Then we had our pumpkin centers where students played Pumpkin Jumble using pattern blocks, discovered if pumpkins float or sink, used estimation to see if they could guess the number of candy corns in different jars, and measured their pumpkin with cubes and centimeters. It was a fun-filled morning! After lunch and recess, the students had a blast painting their pumpkins into their favorite animals. We finished the day reading Room On The Broom and finding rhyming words. I have to say- this was the CLEANEST and BEST LISTENING group of students I've had for all these activities. a BIG BIG BIG thank you to Jackie, Leah, Kelly, Cori, and George for helping out in the morning! I couldn't have done it without you. Check out all the pictures from the week below! We had a week filled with apples! On Monday we had our apple tasting. We tried red, green, and yellow apples- Macintosh, Granny Smith, and Golden Delicious! The class favorite ended up as Golden Delicious! We made predictions, wrote about how they all tasted, and graphed our class favorites. We also wrote and entire book about the apple tree in all four seasons. It was a day filled with fun! Then on Thursday we concluded our apple unit with a field trip to Lakeview Orchard in Lanesboro! It was a beautiful morning at the orchard and the kids had a great time picking Empire apples! What a week we had in first grade!
This week we learned the game BUMP! The students had a great time playing during our Fact Fluency Friday time. During this time the first graders practice their addition and subtraction facts through games. This will become an every Friday activity! They also learned a new game on the GoMath App on the computers. It was a FUN FRIDAY!
